STILL PRESSING ON, AS USUAL
As you might have expected, our summer was as packed as our summers
usually are. One of our "normal" summer stops was a Bible
conference in York. What was usual is that we made some strategic
contacts—including a former professional baseball player who
has a ministry among today's players [ :-) ] -- and had great opportunities
to talk with a number of people about what God is doing among Jewish
people and through Menorah Ministries. What was unusual was that
we met an Israeli citizen now living in the U.S. (This is NOT a
conference where you would normally meet Israelis.) As it turns
out, Davida, the Israeli, had been one of our students in Jerusalem
when we both taught at Jerusalem College of Bible in the summer
of 1995. Davida mentioned how much our teaching had meant to her
at that significant stage in her life, which was very encouraging
to hear. And, it was a further encouragement to learn how those
classes continue to shape her—and her husband's—life
today. In fact, she still has the notes of those classes and values
them so much she uses them in her own teaching!
As we move into the fall, we're excited about several families
that have joined our Messianic synagogue. They have come to us from
places as diverse as Louisiana, Wisconsin, and York (as well as
Florida :-) ). Some had heard or read about our synagogue -- or
discovered us on a previous visit to this area -- and really appreciated
our approach and perspective. Others had learned about our combined
seminary and yeshiva program over the internet. (What we offer through
these programs from a biblical and Jewish perspective is quite unique.)
But all had moved into this area specifically to be part of what
God is doing among us at the synagogue, or to take advantage of
the distinctive programs of the seminary and yeshiva.
As we move through September and October, we anticipate exciting
times and increased opportunities as we progress through the fall
holiday season, which includes the awesome Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah
( Year) and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) as well as the delightful
festivals of Sukkot (Tabernacles) and Simhat Torah (Rejoicing in
the Torah). These are usually times when we attract a larger than
normal number of visitors. This year we sense that God may have
something special in store for us. So, please pray that God enables
us to make the most out of the wonderful contacts that these Jewish
holidays provide.
Thanks for making possible this ongoing multi-generational teaching
and impact through your prayers and contributions!
Love in our Messiah,
John and Patrice
Oh yes, we promised some of you that we would tell you about Patrice.
In mid-August, we went out to a local restaurant to enjoy a lovely
dinner. On her way to the restroom, Patrice slipped and fell on
the slick floor, hitting her arm. At first, she seemed to be quite
alright and just a little bruised. But that night when the pain
became too intense, we ended up in the hospital emergency room.
X-rays revealed she had borken her left elbow! It was an "interesting"
addition to our summer activities and to the "interesting times"
we shared with you in our last letter. The splint and the sling
came off a week or so ago, and she is doing physical therapy to
restore strength and movement to the joint.
